Getting started with a Ford® 7.3L Power Stroke® Swap Project

The relationship between Ford and International® was off to a great start in the 1980’s. They first collaborated in 1983 with the use of a 6.9L IDI International engine. This later became a 7.3L IDI and was used from 1988-1994. 1994-2003 brought forth the T444E version of the 7.3L diesel engine and has been marked in history as one of the best diesel engines to have ever been produced.

Diesel Conversion Specialists® has and is making efforts to supply customers with the essential components to get the T444E Power Stroke powerhouse into vehicles that can benefit from its staggering reliability and ability to get the job done. Our current product range is based on the 1999-2003 Super Duty® versions of the 7.3L. With the Super Duty truck platform change in 1999 came a few more power output upgrades, making them the preferred 7.3L to get. These engines can be chipped, and the power that they achieve when this is done is impressive for having no other modifications.

The 7.3L Power Stroke engine is BIG! Finding that out when you have already committed to the project can leave you scratching your head. The dry weight of the engine is over 900lbs. The manifold and oil cooler can get in the way of steering components. The oil filter and oil cooler are on the right side viewed from the front and can cause some space concerns for the differential as well as steering components. The accessory drive is no joke either. The odds of the power steering pump contacting the frame or gear box are high. Your firewall and turbo will be tough to keep separated as well.

Wiring for the 7.3L Power Stroke can be an intimidating undertaking for most. The engine harness can be separated at the C138 connector below the air intake and above the valve cover. This harness then runs to the PCM and IDM. You will need that harness as well as the PCM, IDM, and throttle pedal If you are looking to do a 7.3L diesel swap.

At this time our library of parts and support for the Power Stroke engine is not extensive, but what we do have can help immensely when taking on a 7.3L engine swap. Here are the 7.3L Power Stroke conversion friendly parts we offer:
